Ashes opener locked in for Gabba, but no India guarantee

Image
The Gabba has been locked in for the opening Test of the 2021-22 Ashes but there has been no similar guarantee made for next year's visit by India who did not play at Australia's stronghold on their tour last season. Australia's Test team are unbeaten in Brisbane in 30 years and it has traditionally been the starting point for the Test summer, but last season the first match against India was played in Adelaide much to the frustration of the players and management. Instead, Australia played Sri Lanka in a day-night Test in late January which struggled to attract fans and was over well inside three days. Last month it was confirmed that the ground would regain the opening Test for the 2019-20 season against Pakistan with the interests of the Australia players at the forefront but, at the time, there was no confirmation of future years. The Ashes commitment to the Gabba comes on the back of Queensland Cricket getting state funding for an AUS$35 million upgrade of facil...

India is the best team at the World Cup… the others can’t handle as much pressure, says Sanjay Manjrekar

Image
Sanjay Manjrekar has a rather pleasant voice. It comes in handy when he occasionally sings Kishore Kumar songs and, more often, when he commentates on cricket. He is one of the three Indian voices the ICC has hired for the World Cup in England (Sourav Ganguly and Harsha Bhogle are the others). Before moving behind the microphone, Manjrekar was admired for the technical virtuosity of his batting. He finished his Test career with 2,043 runs at an average of 37.14. He was a much better player than those figures suggest. He stopped playing two decades ago, but has remained an avid observer of the game. Recently at Jaipur, he spoke to The Hindu on a variety of topics, including the World Cup, the IPL, the future of Tests and cricket commentary. Excerpts: How do you rate India’s chances at the World Cup? India is the best team at the World Cup. Whether they win is another matter. When you are playing bilateral one-day matches there isn’t as much pressure, but a World Cup semifinal o...

(If you are viewing this on The Hindu app, click this link to open the scorecard in your browser) Pakistan will seek inspiration from its dramatic Champions Trophy win in England two years ago when it takes on a resurgent West Indies on Friday. Pakistan has lost its past 10 ODIs, including a 5-0 whitewash by Australia and 4-0 thumping by England, and its problems were further compounded when it went down to Afghanistan by three wickets in a warm-up match. But skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed hopes his side will draw inspiration from 2017, when the team was in a similar position. “We will seek inspiration from our Champions Trophy win because then too we were losing and then lifted ourselves at the right time to win the trophy,” Sarfaraz said. Pakistan had lost 4-1 in Australia before the tournament and India thumped it by 124 runs in the opening game. But it then beat South Africa, Sri Lanka and England on its way to the final, where it outclassed India again by 180 runs. “The boys are ...

The Proteas were given the stiff challenge of facing the top-ranked side and tournament hosts in front of a sold-out Oval crowd and came out of the experience with a 104-run defeat. The Joy of Six: calamitous Cricket World Cup campaigns

From Australia and South Africa choking at home to India’s 2007 shock and England’s woes, half a dozen CWC nightmares The year 2007 changed cricket, a transformation that pivoted on India’s performance in its two international tournaments – their early exit from the 50-over shindig and their triumph in the inaugural Twenty20 one. In a Caribbean World Cup that opened with four groups of four from which only two teams progressed, the competition’s defining day was not its concluding one – when Australia emphatically beat Sri Lanka to secure a third successive crown – but its fifth, on which Pakistan and India crashed to cataclysmic defeats, against Ireland and Bangladesh respectively. Pakistan’s tournament was then engulfed by tragedy with the death of their coach, Bob Woolmer, while India’s was a strictly cricketing calamity – but one that reverberated throughout the game. 2019 cricket World Cup | We need to move on quickly from England loss: du Plessis

Image
South Africa will have to move on quickly from the drubbing it received in the World Cup opener against England and regroup before its next game against Bangladesh, said captain Faf du Plessis. South Africa were thrashed by 104 runs by favourites England in the opening match of the ICC World Cup, which began at The Oval on Thursday. Asked to bat, England made 311 for eight and then bundled out South Africa for 207. Du Plessis admitted they were outplayed in all facets of the game by England. “You are going to play games and come up against opposition that are better than you. England beat us in all three facets of the game,” Du Plessis said after the defeat. “As much as we are disappointed, we will want to learn from it quickly and put it to bed. We want to move on from it quickly.” South Africa will face Bangladesh in its second match, at The Oval on Sunday. 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup | Eng vs SA: England brings cheer to the faithful with a thumping win

Ben Stokes starred in all departments as England began its quest with a 104-run thrashing of South Africa in the tournament opener at the Oval on Thursday. The all-rounder top-scored with 89 in England’s 311 for eight, held a brilliant catch in the outfield and took two for 12 as England won with 61 balls left. Jofra Archer did the early damage, the fast bowler taking three for 27 in seven overs. Amla injured Barbados-born Archer made his presence felt, even before he had taken a wicket, with a bouncer that beat Hashim Amla for pace and crashed into the grille of the helmet to make the veteran opener retire hurt on five. Archer then reduced the Proteas to 44 for two as Aiden Markram edged to Joe Root at slip and South Africa captain Faf du Plessis fell for just five when he top-edged a hook. But Quinton de Kock kept the Proteas in the hunt, although he was lucky when on 25 he played a ball from leg-spinner Adil Rashid onto his stumps only for the bails to stay put. The left-han...

In 1979 the standout bewildering go-slow came from England in the final as West Indies retained their crown, helped by superb exhibitions of hitting from Viv Richards and Collis King. The 1983 tournament was all about India toppling West Indies and changing cricket, its iconic moment Kapil Dev catching Richards . Prodigy Ben Stokes goes from Firestarter to firefighter with dazzling display | Andy Bull

The all-rounder came in when England were wobbling but his calm assurance set up a big total and then he took a wonder catch and the last two South Africa wickets According to the ICC the average age of people who have bought tickets for this World Cup is 40, but one would never have known it on Thursday morning. It felt as ife there were 25,000 children spilling out of the tube stations and pouring up Harleyford Road towards the Oval. Everyone who cares feels a bit like a little kid again on days such as this, especially now England have a team worth getting childishly excited about. Lankans will hope to put up a better fight

Image
A beleaguered Sri Lanka-A will hope to put up a fight against confident India-A in the second and final ‘Test’, which commences at the KSCA Stadium here on Friday. The Sri Lankans need a quick turnaround from a shoddy show in the first outing at Belagavi, which resulted in a massive innings-and-205-run defeat. Niroshan Dickwella’s attacking century in the first essay was the lone bright spot for the outmatched visitors. The lack of inspiration came as a surprise, given that the unit consists of several players with international experience like skipper Ashan Priyanjan, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Akila Dananjaya, Lakshan Sandakan and Lahiru Kumara. Much was expected from Dananjaya, but the spinner barely made an impact. Danajaya went for 136 runs for one wicket, and found little support from his slow partner Sandakan (one for 145). 2019 Cricket World Cup | Mashrafe likely to play opener despite injury

2019 Cricket World Cup | Meet Team India: Virat Kohli — the giant of contemporary cricket

Image
That Virat Kohli’s imprint on Indian cricket is immense is signalled by the fact that he has ushered in a cultural change. The change has broadly come about in two aspects, his first coach, Rajkumar Sharma, points out — fitness and self-belief. “Now, all our players are very fit. There’s nobody whom we have to hide. Earlier, we would have two or three players we used to hide. It’s the culture that everybody wants to work hard [and be fit]. That is the best thing,” Rajkumar said. Urge to throw Throwing the ball with full strength to the wicketkeeper while fielding may be standard among aspiring cricketers, but the enthusiastic Kohli would ensure he did it every time at the West Delhi Cricket Academy, his cricketing alma mater, regardless of whether anyone was backing up. It didn’t matter whether the throw was needed or not. “Till today, if you watch any of his matches, if he picks up the ball he will throw it hard. So I would have to shout from the boundary line: ‘Virat, mat maar...

BCCI suspends Rinku

While Rinku’s suspension starts on June 1, the BCCI had let go Irfan Pathan with a warning for putting his name in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) draft without the parent body’s prior permission before withdrawal. Similarly, no action was taken against Anuj Rawat for playing unsanctioned T20 league in Mauritius with Pakistan cricketers of dubious credibility. Rinku has also been a part of Kolkata Knight Riders for the past two seasons and it was learnt that he played in the unsanctioned league after the IPL got over. “It has been brought to the notice of the BCCI that First Class cricketer from Uttar Pradesh and India ‘A’ player Rinku Singh participated in an unauthorised T20 tournament in Abu Dhabi,” the BCCI said in a statement. “Singh did not seek permission from the BCCI before ...

India tries ‘Round The Clock’ fielding drill

Image
The Indian team has always been considered as a safe “catching unit” but fielding coach R. Sridhar now wants improvement in the conversion rate for direct throws in the upcoming World Cup. Except Ravindra Jadeja, some of the younger players in the current squad, despite their supreme fitness and agility, are not able to get their direct throws on target, a crucial aspect during close games. Trying to beat the monotony, fielding coach Sridhar introduced a new drill ‘Round The Clock’, wherein fielders at six different positions will take a shy at the non-striker’s end. While the drill seemed to be like ‘old wine in a new bottle’, the players seemed to be enjoying the session, which is the key during a big tournament. The theme “We had an interesting fielding session today. The theme of the session was direct hit.
