England got their World Cup campaign off to an uninspiring start as they set South Africa a target of 312 in the first innings at The Kia Oval. 

Jonny Bairstow was bowled out for nothing in an awful start for the hosts before Jason Roy, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan all hit half-centuries. 

Ben Stokes spared England's blushes on the opening day by hitting 89 runs on the opening day in south London.
