Botham, Richards and Garner’s dramatic Somerset exit: the inside story | Vic Marks

In an exclusive extract from his new book Original Spin, Vic Marks talks about the tensions that tore his county team apart in 1986 Shockwaves were felt across Somerset at the end of the 1986 season when the club announced that their overseas players, Viv Richards and Joel Garner, would be replaced by Martin Crowe, with the inevitable consequence of Ian Botham’s departure. Somerset had finished 16th in the championship and there was a critical loss to Lancashire in the second round of the NatWest Trophy in July. BCCI Ethics Officer Dismisses Conflict Of Interest Charge Against Sachin Tendulkar

BCCI Ethics Officer Justice DK Jain Monday dismissed the 'conflict of interest' allegations against Sachin Tendulkar after the cricket icon refused to be part of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) unless he is provided with agreeable 'terms of reference'. Jain in a two-page verdict described the allegations as "infructuous" (pointless), ruling that the matter had to be disposed off after Tendulkar made his position clear that he will not "act as such" a member of the CAC. "Once the BCCI furnished the terms of reference and tenure, he will decide on the course of his participation in the same. Mr Tendulkar doesn't consider himself to be part of any Cricket Advisory Comittee and will not act as such. In consequence, the present complaint doesn't survive for adjudication." "....resultantly, the present complaint is rendered infructuous and is disposed of, as such," Jain wrote in his verdict. Jain, who is also BCCI O...

India tries ‘Round The Clock’ fielding drill

Image
The Indian team has always been considered as a safe “catching unit” but fielding coach R. Sridhar now wants improvement in the conversion rate for direct throws in the upcoming World Cup. Except Ravindra Jadeja, some of the younger players in the current squad, despite their supreme fitness and agility, are not able to get their direct throws on target, a crucial aspect during close games. Trying to beat the monotony, fielding coach Sridhar introduced a new drill ‘Round The Clock’, wherein fielders at six different positions will take a shy at the non-striker’s end. While the drill seemed to be like ‘old wine in a new bottle’, the players seemed to be enjoying the session, which is the key during a big tournament. The theme “We had an interesting fielding session today. The theme of the session was direct hit. The focus was on the boys getting it right from different angles at the non-striker’s end. “Initially, we started with a drill called ‘Round the Clock’, where there wer...
